Working with Self Esteem through Counselling in Naas and Online

What is self esteem?

Self-esteem is how we perceive and value ourselves. Self esteem influences our confidence, decision-making, relationships, and our mental health.

If you believe in your abilities, accept yourself, and feel worthy of love and respect, you likely have a healthy sense of self esteem. But, if you don’t feel you can relate to those feelings, you may have low self esteem.

How do you know if you have low self esteem?

If you feel as though you doubt yourself and your abilities, often think self critically, and have difficulty navigating life’s challenges, you may have low self esteem.

Some examples of low self esteem include:

  • Constant self-criticism and negative self-talk

  • Difficulty accepting compliments

  • Fear of failure or perfectionism

  • Avoiding social situations due to self-doubt

  • Feeling unworthy or not good enough

  • Comparing yourself negatively to others

  • Struggling with assertiveness and setting boundaries

  • Experiencing anxiety, stress, or depression due to self-perception

If you relate to any of the above, you may find that working on your self esteem can help you to build your confidence and develop a more positive relationship with yourself.

Ways to improve self esteem

Unfortunately, like with much of life, we can’t improve our self esteem over night. Instead, it’s a gradual process that involves changing thought patterns and behaviours. Some initial ways to improve self esteem that you can begin implementing are:

  • Challenging any negative thoughts about yourself as they arise.

  • Reframing those thoughts into positive ones, and practising self compassion through being kind to yourself.

  • Surrounding yourself with supportive and encouraging people that make you feel good about yourself.

  • You may want to explore counselling, which can provide you with guidance and effective ways to improve your self esteem.
